Please go see arcticsplash document all the amazing and interesting architecture things going on on Chestnut east of Broad. If you are in Philly and you aren’t looking up while you stroll around Philly, especially Center City, you are missing out.
When I first came to Philly many years ago one of the first things I did was walk from Temple all the way to City Hall. As a suburban kid I was simultaneously amazed and overwhelmed. (Only later would I really get a lesson in the naïveté of walking up and down North Broad without at least an orientation in city living.) My trip ended up terminating in a long walk down Chestnut to Front. 21 years ago Chestnut Street East of Broad was already kind of a disaster, but a totally different one than it is now. But the vivid memory of seeing all these amazing buildings, most of them decrepit and rotting, will never leave me. For a long time the Victory Building was one of my favorite buildings in Philly and seeing it get renovated many years later was really great.
more of the 1200 block of chestnut - south side of street. weird one.
